Atomic Habits- James Clear

Inconsistency with habit formation is a common issue that many face while in the process of navigating to achieve a specific goal. It is imperative to understand how to effectively set goals, initiate a response, and experience reward. Understanding that our habits shape every aspect of our lives, it is clear that, as a society, we must dedicate a portion of our time to learning about how to form effective and beneficial habits for various aspects of our lives, which may include our health, academic/ vocational success, healthy relationships, and many more.

Atomic Habits, by James Clear, does an excellent job supporting individuals who not only want to form better habits but also those who want to decrease or completely eliminate their engagement in harmful or unproductive habits. Atomic Habits effectively guides individuals towards success by covering how to improve and grow in areas such as procrastination, addiction, consistency, habit tracking, and several more.

What is special about this book is the difficult yet heroic journey that the author went through as he attempted to regain his power and success after a tragic accident. His story serves as inspiration for individuals who may have failed after attempting to form habits previously, and seeing Clear’s powerful success may inspire the audience more effectively than any other ordinary book.

The book emphasizes the importance of being able to initiate smaller or easier habits consistently (as the title suggests), rather than habits that are instant and consist of large changes, in order to see better results in the long run. This aspect of the book shows the importance of patience as individuals try to form new habits. Throughout the book, James Clear gives simple and effective tips on how to initiate even the smaller habits that may seem rather easy on the surface level, which helps the structure of the book greatly. In general, by foreseeing the likelihood of inconsistency, Clear is able to form a strong guide to achieving productivity.

From a psychological perspective, the text goes deep into how family and friends can heavily influence one’s habits, and how the desire to fit in and keep connections can sometimes increase the likelihood of forming harmful habits and decrease the likelihood of keeping productive or beneficial habits. One example of this occurrence that was emphasized in the book was the influence that friends who tend to smoke and drink have on their surroundings. It was seen that individuals who were non-smokers specifically tended to try out smoking to fit into their surroundings. Clear later pointed out how this introduction to smoking turned into a harmful addiction and an unhealthy coping mechanism for mental stress. Generally, throughout the book, there were several psychological concepts involved, including concepts like conditioned/unconditioned responses and rewards.

Taking into account the various perspectives that were present within Atomic Habits, it can clearly be said that the book takes an effective approach to habit formation. Personally, the book helped broaden my perspective and helped me gain awareness of possible stimuli that could be affecting my success, and unfortunately, sometimes my lack of success with consistency in forming productive and beneficial habits. Upon reflection, I truly believe that if an individual wants to improve their lifestyle and productivity, Atomic Habits would be an excellent read for them!
